Apply sunscreen after your usual skincare and before makeup. Keep it as a separate, even layer instead of mixing it into foundation. This makes the amount and coverage easier to keep track of. Wearing makeup does not remove the need to reapply sunscreen when you are outdoors.

Your morning routine in four steps

  1. Skincare

Cleanse and use the skincare you need. Follow your clinician’s advice for prescribed skin medication.

  2. Sunscreen

Spread enough over exposed skin. Include your hairline, ears and neck, following the label.

  3. Let it settle

Give the layer time to settle before continuing. Follow the label’s waiting time before sun exposure.

  4. Makeup

Apply primer, foundation or concealer gently. Stop if the layers shift or start to pill.

A practical guide for ordinary skincare products, following the AAD’s suggested order. Instructions for your product or treatment take priority.

Why sunscreen goes before foundation

The American Academy of Dermatology places sun protection after skincare and before makeup. Applying a separate layer helps you deliberately cover every area. Foundation often goes only where you want cosmetic coverage; that is not necessarily every area exposed to sunlight.

Use a mirror to check the sides of your face, the tops of your ears and the transition to your neck. This checks your routine, not your protection level. A smooth finish cannot tell you the actual SPF on your skin.

How long should you wait before makeup?

There is no universal waiting time proven to work for every sunscreen and foundation combination. Let sunscreen settle and notice whether the layer stays in place as you apply makeup. Always follow the label for the interval before sun exposure.

Do not assume this is the same as the time your foundation needs. The AAD recommends applying sunscreen before going outdoors. Make it part of getting ready, rather than the last thing you remember at the door.

Do not mix your own SPF cocktail

Mixing sunscreen into foundation or moisturiser makes it difficult to know how much sunscreen you use and how evenly it spreads. The stated SPF belongs to the tested product, not your homemade mixture. SPF 30 plus SPF 20 does not add up to SPF 50 either.

Does the combination feel too heavy? Simplify the layers underneath or try a different combination first. Do not reduce the sunscreen amount to make makeup sit better. Read about how much sunscreen to use on your face, neck and ears and what to try when sunscreen pills.

Plan for later in the day

A morning routine does not solve reapplication. Take your sunscreen when spending time outside. The AAD advises reapplying roughly every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating as directed. Clothing, shade and a hat still help.

Decide before leaving: light makeup may be easier to refresh than several full-coverage layers. See reapplying sunscreen over makeup for options and their limitations. Comfortable use under makeup is a development goal for Soluveli; the finished formula still needs to demonstrate it.
